Don't Count Out Lincoln Cents just yet..
making the news in a very big way on May 22, 2025, is that the US Mint placed its last order..
Production of the Lincoln Cent will end when the final stock of blanks runs out — presumably in 2026 — which would coincidentally be the 250th anniversary of our nation's birth. That is correct, in the days of the Lincoln Cent, that venerable "penny," will soon be a nostalgic memory. The penny will remain legal tender, although its value in the current marketplace is but a ghostly shadow of its heyday. It will be sad to "live" through a coin being removed from annual production. Estimating that there are perhaps 200 billion Lincoln Cents remaining in circulation, I'm pretty sure that the Lincoln penny will not be just a memory in our lifetimes.
That said, within the coin world there is already a significant clamor and a move to secure untold scores of both copper and copper-clad cents, presumably for speculation as well as upcoming promotions. I know, I know — but it's a free country. For right now, I think acquiring some original Red BU rolls of Wheat-backed Lincolns from the early-to-mid 1950s would be an inexpensive and very rewarding enterprise. Those glowing red and gold coppers (especially ones over 60 years old) are bound to bring a smile to the old time collector and are sure to impress the younger set at least a little. At present, buyers are slowly raising the ante, and the coins abound in the $25 range for "original" red rolls. So be on the lookout for your "Wheaties!" Good luck hunting.
