This week on Rare Coin Weekly we're diving down under to Australia to learn about a unique coin that's roughly going for $600,000.00 but sometimes after it comes off of display in the end of August.

A uniquely rare half sovereign coin, valued at $600,000, is now on display at the Perth Mint. Believed to be the only known example of a coin of record from the Mint’s opening year in 1899, the coin was struck using four dies from London and is one of Australia’s most valuable pre-decimal coins.
The exhibit, organized in partnership with numismatic specialists Coinworks, will run until August 13, after which the coin will be sold. Coinworks Managing Director Belinda Downie emphasized the coin’s historical and cultural significance, while Perth Mint’s retail manager Tina Kircher expressed excitement about hosting the exhibit.

Franklin half dollars are a series of silver coins that were minted by the United States from 1948 to 1963. Designed by John R. Sinnock, the coin features a portrait of Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, on the obverse (front) side. The reverse (back) side displays the Liberty Bell, a symbol of American independence.
These half dollars were minted in 90% silver and 10% copper, with a diameter of 30.6 mm. They were issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Franklin's birth. The coins were produced at various U.S. Mint facilities, including Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco.
Franklin half dollars are popular among collectors for their historical significance, attractive design, and silver content. The series came to an end in 1963 when it was replaced by the Kennedy half dollar, following the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

“This is about more than just a rare coin”, said Belinda Downie. She travelled to Perth from Melbourne to oversee the coin’s installation.
“It’s a celebration of Australian history, craftsmanship, and the special place gold holds in the Mint’s story. We are very proud to partner with The Perth Mint to share this with the public.”
